Please can you tell me what an English coal miner would have eaten?
When working in the pit, what would have a coal miner eaten down there and in the canteen?
the food network had something on this. Elton Brown did a special on this. it was a meat and potato filled pastry called a pasty(I was amazed because i got the recipe for these from my mother in law before she passed). from what i understand it was the best way to preserve and take with them. almost looks like a pita pocket but out of pie dough. and baked alltogether. from what I understand the recipe has been in my hubby's family for quite some time.

here is my recipe
1 pkg frozen pie dough(Pillsbury) I make my own but this works.
1lb ground beef lean
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1tsp garlic powder
1 onion chopped
3 potatoes chopped about dime sized
Put the ground beef, salt, pepper, potatoes, onion and garlic powder in a bowl and incorporate. Take a cookie sheet and put one of the pie doughs flat.put half the meat mixture in the center of the pie dough and then flip over and seal the end. It will look like a half moon and do the same with the other.
bake at 350 for an hour. check to see if done approx meat thermometer should be 180.
I think this recipe has been in the family for at least 100 years. but my mother in law tweeked it to be easier
I know in their canteen it was water. It got hot down there.(my grandfather worked in the ones in pittsburg he said most of them brought water)
