T Shirts : A Look Back At This Fashion Staple
The fashion trends of 2010, with musical influences like indie rock and new rave at the forefront, have greatly influenced the t shirt design industry, particularly in terms of the tees made for men. It used to be that the only fashionable t shirt color was white. But the bright, bold vividly colored t shirts for guys appearing on fashion runways now feature bold, splashy patterns a world apart from the old styles.
T shirts first emerged in the fashion culture in the 1800's. However, they were created as an undergarment for men to wear under their primary shirt. It was not until the emergence of the new century that Europeans began to popularize the t shirt as outerwear. During World War One, American soldiers observed the soft, Egyptian cotton shirt worn by Europeans. The t shirt quickly spread to the United States, especially since soldiers donned heavy wool uniforms at the time.
It was in World War II that the t shirt gained iconic status for servicemen in the U.S. Army and Navy. Soldiers stationed in hot climates began wearing the tee without any other shirt or jacket on top - even though the white tee was still officially considered underwear. At that point the modern concept of the t shirt was born, and the public constantly saw photographs of soldiers sporting their cool tees. In time, the fashion spread throughout the American culture.
In the years following World War II, international movie stars such as James Dean, Marlon Brando and John Wayne began wearing t shirts, furthering the popularity of the garment. Since then t shirt fashion trends have changed repeatedly. The styles from the 1960s and 1970s set the stage for trends that continue today. Ringer t shirts were the rage in the '60s, along with silk-screened and tie-dyed styles. In the '70s, rock music enthusiasts throughout the world were wearing the black concert tee printed with the logo or symbol of their favorite rock band.
T shirt creativity did not stop there. The last two decades of the twentieth century saw the emergence of slogan t shirts. Slogans like "I'm with stupid" or "Frankie says Relax" were pervasive on t shirts, the latter of which also received inspiration from a musical band - Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Slogan tees became so pervasive, however, that trend setters began "personal branding" for t shirts. During the first decade of the twenty first century, this fashion statement took off with amazing success.
The t shirt craze is not expected to end anytime soon. In fact, with t shirt websites and in-store retailers increasingly allowing customers to effortlessly create their own designs, the popularity is only mounting. The options have in fact grown towards infinity, with the number of bold patterns and bright colors now available for t shirts. There is one thing for certain with the future of t shirt design - it will only expand to become bolder and more adventurous to suit the appetite of the every-growing t shirt culture.
