How To Promote A Gig Or Comedy Night
If you have the task of promoting an event such as a club night, gig or any kind of live music concert, it's essential that you do everything you can to create awareness and/or sell tickets to ensure it can be as successful as possible. There are many ways you can do this. In this article I'll give you some of the best tips that are often overlooked, and most of these tips will also work if you're promoting things like independent cinema screenings, comedy nights and pretty much any other kind of live performance.
Crucially, it's important to do as many different things as you can rather than relying on just one or two methods. Even if you have had success using one method in the past, it's important to keep trying other ways of spreading the word of the event you are trying to promote, because a lot of it is down to sheer luck (regarding whether or not people actually notice the work you are doing to create awareness). One problem I often see is that promoters get lazy or complacent after they've had a successful night, and expect to see the customers keep coming back week after week. When the attendance numbers start dropping, they start thinking that gigs aren't as popular as they used to be, when in reality it's just that there isn't enough awareness of the event. There might also be other problems which are not helping, such as bad attitude of bar staff or over-inflated bar prices, or maybe the security guys are over-zealous. There are lots of reasons why gig-goers won't want to return, so at least make sure you are bringing plenty of new faces in each week otherwise you'll lose out on those all-important ticket sales.
* Posters & Flyers - If you're the type of promoter who only puts up poster in the actual venue itself, then you're wasting your time. Likewise if you put your posters up everywhere BUT the actual venue then this is also a massive mistake (and something I see all the time). It's simply no good to just put a few flyers and posters around the venue where the event is being held. The only way to get a good response and bring in new faces is to get out into the community and distribute your printed materials in cafes, bars, schools and universities, and also as many workplaces as you can. A poster on a staff notice board can be very effective but you will need to get past the "gatekeeper" or receptionist at these places by being friendly and charming.
* Facebook - Create a facebook event page and do whatever you can to promote it. Try not to be too "spammy" about it.
* T-Shirts - Make sure you and your promotional staff are wearing t-shirts advertising the event.
