What happenend to the famous military honor?
On my last trip to Tokyo, I met an American G.I. and we started talking a bit. We met again the next day in the Hard Rock Cafe and had a few drinks. Suddenly I needed some money so I went to the local ATM. He accompanied me, and when I withdrew $400, he wanted to do the same. 'Unfortunately' his saldo was insufficient, so he asked me to advance him $150. Being a ex army officer, I never doubted his honesty and gave him the money. He gave me his name, email address and told me that this was a honory thing; he would come to my hotel ASAP and give it back. Guess what happened? Never saw him back & his email was a fake...
I guess they don't teach moral values anymore in the army.
I didn't mention he was not alone in the HRC. When we came back from the ATM, he was telling all his friends (4) what a nice guy I was. I guess I got unlucky to find the only 5 rotten apples in the G.I. basket at the same place...
It is becoming increasingly difficult for the military (in a short period of time) to overcome the deceit and utter disregard for the truth practiced in the civilian world. Take a look at some of the responses generated to questions about medical standards on this site. Lots of "don't tell them" or "just lie" abound in the answers.
The guy you met is one of those. And he was one of those before he ever raised his right hand to take the oath of enlistment. If you want to know who to blame, then take it out on the entire school of situational ethics first taught by William Sloan Coffin at Yale University: Nothing is black or white. Everything is varying shades of grey.
The only solace I can give you is a fervent hope that this guy comes into a situation which proves the validity of an old adage from Singapore:
"Somedays you get the tiger. Somedays the tiger gets you".
